I really like VB and VBA in a Nutshell from
O'Reilly. It's introductory level but also
thorough. It doesn't provide much for samples
but is a very good reference.

Also Visual Basic Controls in a Nutshell
for control properties reference.

VB6 Complete (Sybex), if you can still find it,
is a cheap book on cheap paper with a
very good collection of samples and
info. The "Complete" books are compilations,
including sections from other books.

For real beginning you might want the
"24 hours"-type books. I would recommend
staying away from the "dummies" books
and anything by Deitl and Deitl. In an hour
you'll have learned what they have to offer and
you'll be out about $40 for your effort.
