I've considered this [reinstalling XP], don't much like the option,
not too bad at this point since I'm just setting the machine up at
this point. I worry that MS will give me static when I try to
reinstall XP and Office though.

You shouldn't have a problem with that. As far as I know when you register
XP with MS they tag the machine ID they generate to the XP product code you
used and even if you're using an OEM version they will, as far as I am
aware, allow you to do another install provided you've done nothing in the
way of changing hardware that might cause the machine ID they generated to
be different from the ID they've got stored on their system (usually only
happens if you actually remove and change certain items such as motherboard
and possibly hard disk). Besides, you can make a Ghost image and Ghost
startup disk of your drive before you reinstall and then if anything does go
belly up you can easily reinstall the Ghost image to get back to exactly
where you were before you started. Ghost (or something similar) is probably
a very useful purchase for you anyway. Can be a godsend in certain
situations. If you reinstall XP and then make VB the first application you
install and if VB still won't install then you've got a more serious problem
of course, posibly with a dodgy XP installation, but I doubt that will
happen. By the way, if you do decide to reinstall XP you would be best
wiping your disk properly first so as to get a full clean new installation.
Obviously if it's a "upgrade" version of XP you've got then you won't be
able to do that, so if you do have the "upgrade" version then make sure
you've got an old Win98 CD hanging around somewhere to start you off. And if
the worst comes to the worst you'll always have your Ghost image to get you
out of trouble. Also, make sure that you have all your modem and video and
other driver disks (including the motherboard driver disk if your machine
has onboard graphics or sound).
