If it were just MS having me believe it all would be well but it isn't. I admit that I haven't played with it in about 3 years but just looking at various Linux newbie type sites is a real turn off. There are quite a few things I don't like about MS but they are not the Evil Empire for me. It would be good to find a basic Linux newbie type site that didn't have an antagonistic attitude to Microsoft for all the wrong reasons. That attitude is a real turn off to Linux making a lot of progress on the desktop. And it is the lack of progress there that is the main reason I'm not that interested in it at the moment.

When I did play with it I quite liked it. I like operating systems and exploring them and getting them to do things and just tinkering under the hood. With Linux I can do that for hours on end. That is great. But when I want to produce things with a computer I just want to boot up and get going.

The average Windows user more often than not is also an AOL user and the reason is because of good PR coupled with it looking so much more user friendly for someone who barely knows how to use a mouse. From what I've seen the Mac is much more suited to that mentality than Linux.

But I'm very much prepared to take a new look at Linux (now there's a good strapline). Which would you recommend as a good desktop system?

you believe. Play with it. You'll see.
