¤ New Trends (RichWebApps): Even if Ajax seems a little bit "over-

¤ I mean, MS is marketing XML-defined GUIs (XAML) as the next

¤ You may find the competition of the two big Linux-Desktops (KDE

¤ both environments and Gnome is supporting "KDE-Apps" (Qt) and
¤ KDE is supporting "Gnome-Apps" (Gtk+).
¤ Browsers are running well on all possible OS-Platforms - the trend
¤ to more (Web-)Server-centric Apps can ease the migration to other
¤ "foreign looking" Desktop-Environments - and regarding the server-
¤ part of these new Apps: that's definitely a field, where Linux is no joke.
¤
¤ That in mind, I think I will use VB-Classic for some additional years
¤ from now - and develop my new Apps then in 2011 maybe with a
¤ brandnew "Ruby-On-Rails-For-XUL"-Framework against a "FireFox-
¤ Enhanced-WebClient 3.0" using a new RichWebApp-based "visual"
¤ IDE, also running inside FireFox.

Web applications have a couple of major built-in problems. First they run over a network. When the
network is down (for whatever reason) work stops. I once consulted for a major insurance company
that ran their apps over the network because they thought it would lower their overall TCO.
Unfortunately network downtime led to a significant loss in productivity and they were forced to go
back to running apps from the desktop.
Second, is accessibility and security to data. You would have to be pretty foolish to be trafficking
your data back and forth across the Internet to an entity such as Google in order to use an online
spreadsheet application. These outfits are not banks or financial institutions, they're software
vendors that could go away in a heartbeat leaving you and/or your business without business tools
and accessibility to your data.
The adoption of Linux on the desktop hasn't made any headway in the last several years. There are
several reasons why. First is support for major applications. Lags way behind Windows. Second, too
many user interfaces as Vincent mentioned. Non-standardization is a very bad thing in this instance.
Third, vendor stability and the fact that is often ends up costing more to actually support "open
source" products.
