Google Groups Killfile / Twit Filter via Internet Explorer
The Visual BASIC 6.0 source code is available for download from my web
site.
Since some people prefer Internet Explorer, I have built a Browser
Helper Object for Internet Explorer that adds a killfile feature.
http://holysmoke.org/ggfbho/index.htm That is in addition to my Google
Groups Killfile browser that uses the WebBrowser ActiveX control
http:/holysmoke.org/ggf/index.htm
One may download the install program and the DLL (placing them in the
same directory), run the install program, and then fire up Internet
Explorer---- and you'll have a killfile! I have tested it on Windows
98se and Windows XP.
My web sites for the downloads also include the source code and sample
images. I figured people who worry about malicious software may look
over the code and compile it themselves. In the past 28 hours 613
people have downloaded the source code, and 1800 have downloaded the
Browser Helper Object.
It works pretty darn good. When the BHO sees that a web page is Google
Groups it scans the HTML DOM and inserts some URLs that in turn either
adds the name of a message's author into the filter list, or opens the
"control panel" so that people can change options on how the BHO works.
It then looks to see who to filter, and when it spots an article by
that person it either blanks the HTML code so that the browser doesn't
show the message even exists, or it places "*Filtered*" in the place of
the article, or it places "Filtered: <name>" in its place. When the web
page is not Google Groups the BHO ignores the page (i.e., it makes no
changes).
If a Google Groups web page has had all of its listed articles
filtered, the BHO will automatically navigate to the next page (Older
articles) if one checks the "Auto Navigate" box in the options window.
This means one need *NEVER* see the Scientology crime syndicate's spam
and diversionary spew ever again.
The BHO makes highly-spammed newsgroups instantly readable via Google
Groups.
