Re: Problems with help files using IE5.5 on W2Ksp4

An entire afternoon was spent trying to find which dll/ocx may have been out of kilter to cause the script/link error problems. Too
much time was being lost in researching the problem, so I finally gave in and upgraded to IE6.

I had heard about the issues when they first came out. At the time, my system was working fine and I didn't have any problems....

.... then the hard drive crashed ...

Here is the answer to my problem.
Upgrading to IE6 sp1 fixed the problems with broken links the .CHM files.
Hope this helps anyone else who might be holding back from doing the
upgrades.

I remember that issue coming up in a script group
at one point. I think there was a very specific fix but I
don't remember what it was.

I have IE 5.00 on Win98SE and used to
see that problem with the Windows Script Host 5.6
help file. I don't have the same problem now. I don't
know how it got fixed, but it didn't require a total IE
update. Probably an HTML help update is more
likely the reason.

I imagine that disabling script in the Local Zone
should also be a fix. It appears that the script MS
uses is just for some kind of visual effect, since
error-generating links still work fine in CHM files.

I mention all of this because IE updates can be
risky business. I first dropped IE about 5 years
ago for anything but offline testing. I'm glad now
because of the security bugs it has, but my original
reason was that I updated from v. 4 to v. 5 and it
ran like molasses whenever I was online....And it
still does. I never figured out why.

Also, as far as the IE DOM goes (for people interested
in customer compatibility) there were a handful of key
changes from IE4xx to IE5.00 in 1999 - and there was
also the addition of HTA in IE5 - but I don't think that much
of anything notable has changed since then.
