Give Ubuntu a good look. I have it set up as a server for prototyping
web sites. It's to your advantage to know the low level commands, but
if you try any of the GUIs I think you'll be amazed.
All it costs is your time. If you have broadband and a CD burner,
download it and give the workstation a try. I think you'll be amazed. I
was blown away by how far it's come.
I have Mandriva and Suse 10 installed. I've
been mainly exploring Suse because it seems
to have a lot of software. Is there a reason that
Ubuntu is better? Other people have also
recommended that but I was aiming for the
versions with the most RPMs. I don't want to
dive in at the deep end.
I wanted to start with
a GUI, firewall, and various other minimal
things that are easy to set up, then go from
there. I'm sure I'll eventually get the commands
down, but I don't want to be forced to the command
line for basic things like installing software.
I have
installed several common utilities with Wine, with
good results, so that helps. And I've been working
a bit with getting my own VB software going in Wine.
VB in Wine is not bad, but still fairly rough.
