Merchandize Security

I wrote a POS system (in VB) targeted for small to medium range retail
stores. The system works very well and most of the users are satisfied. Now
some of the users are asking for "merchandize security" to be incorporated
into the system. By "merchandize security" I mean items are tagged and a
beep goes off if someone tries to (shoplift) take an unpaid item outside the
store. Excuse my terminology but I have no better idea how to explain this.
Does anyone know how this security thing works... Is there a system that can
be incorporated into a VB app? Pointers and URL will be appreciated...
