Sorry Matt. I did mess up the "posting to two newsgroups" thing. The other
group I posted to (the group I have been using for many years until I
recently discovered this GD group, is:

No. It is not printer specific because the same thing happens when printing
to the screen. It actually looks like a WinXP problem, because my other
machine (Win98) prints it all fine, exactly as I would expect it to print.
Everyone who has replied so far gets the same result that I explained in my
initial post, but they are all using WinXP. I'm currently waiting
(hopefully) for some Win98 people to post an answer to see if their Win98
machines do not have the problem (as my own Win98 machine does not).
