I have two XP machines, one running XP Pro SP2 (\\vbnetdev) and the other XP
Pro no SP (\\laptopxp). I followed the instructions from the page you
provided to create the server and client dde apps.
With the server as \\laptopxp (the non SP machine) and the client app
running the SP2 machine, after starting the two DDE services (Network DDE
DSDM and Network DDE) on both machines and launching the ddesvr app the text
from the dde server is passed to the form's text box when the button is
pressed. No problems.
With the apps the other way around (and the machine name changed
appropriately), the app does not work giving an error 282: no foreign
application responded to a DDE initiate. So it looks like it might indeed
be blocked when an XP2 machine is used as the server machine.
No idea if using the DDE APIs would provide a workaround via security access
or some other aspect.

: Thanks Randy,
:
: I mentioned (in my original post) the need to have the services "disabled"
: upon bootup then changed to manual and started to have "normal" NetDDE
: communication. NetDDE is "severely" hampered if the services are set to
: manual or automatic upon bootup.
:
: My real question now is "can NetDDE as a server" on a computer having XP
: SP2? I can't make it happen and I wish to move my server to a new XP SP2
: computer. I wish someone could tell me this answer, either yes or no so I
: could determine my future. I have given the address of the Microsoft
example
: of how to create a simple NetDDE server and client (very simple
: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;181946), but no
one
: seems to have tried it to verify my results. This example has been around
: for awhile and still works perfectly as a server on Win2000, but not on XP
: SP2. It worked fine on XP SP1. That's my rub. I need to know about SP2.
:
: I "did" take the time to read (entirely) the issue of the vulnerability. I
: knew about this some time ago. But.... in the bulletin, it says that calls
: for support from Microsoft are free if they apply to a specific security
: update. I plan to call and see if my problem applies directly to this
: vulnerability (even though they specifically say that SP2 is not affected
by
: this problem).
:
: As an aside, could you or anyone else tell me if it possible to
: programmatically set services to a "disabled" state like we can do
manually
: in services. If it were possible, I could then upon shutdown, reset the
: services to "disabled" so that the next time the computer is booted, it is
: set in the proper setting, disabled.
:
: Once again,
:
: Thanks,
:
