Ken,
The biggest stumbling block I see on the SP2 (and SP6) is the use of the
ICF. Those of us with a firewall installed prior to SP2 (especially those of
us with Zone Alarm Pro installed) are accustomed to answering the sort of
questions the ICF poses. The issue may simply be to bite the bullet and
admit that getting onto the internet without worrying about security is not
an option. If you want to go there, use a firewall and do so prudently.
Enable ICF or not... your choice. I do not accept the idea that a service
pack should be ignored and I am truly curious about the idea that an MVP
would advocate one to ignore a service pack. Programming to it has not been
well-addressed.
I seriously disagree with your opinion here both on the VB SP6 as well as
the SP2 issue. My office is not upgrading to SP2 (delaying is the word they
use) and I find the concept contra-intuitive. I guess you can safely say
that I have "issues" with this, I don't deny that. Perhaps someone can
enlighten me as to why SP2 is an issue at all (not on this list though - this
is VB, maybe I should say SP6). Since I have not seen it work adversely yet
on my personal machines, I will admit to being lucky at this point but stop
short there. It takes a level of understanding to decide whether a program
is safe or not, but I don't believe users are too dim-witted to make those
choices. The ones who make poor choices will need to face consequences as
has always been true for life in general.
I haven't seen anything on where SP3 is going yet. I think there are one or
two upgrades issued for those running SP2. Has Microsoft begun defining
SP3? Why is this going to be a superior upgrade and why would I want to wait
for it? Does SP3 address VB6 and VS6?
Yep.
