Now that you've got me to consider it, Mozilla 1.6, which I believe to be
still the latest release, seems to be a significant part of the problem.
I'm really surprised (at Mozilla).
You don't suppose MS did something snarky in that applet to screw them up?
Looks like (though I really, really, really detest IE) I'm going to be
able to check out the docs now. Sorry about the virtual shouting.

It helps to know it's not yours.
I would suggest you make at least a small effort to see if there's
some tweak you can apply to help Mozilla work.
Also, could you clarify what the issue is with the cab files? I downloaded
cimctl40.zip, and wanted to manuall install just the very minimum of files,
but couldn't get inside the cabs with WinZip. After too many horror stories
I just have a hard time trusting anyone's installers any more.
I just had a friend today copy me a "very suspicious" email he got - in it was
a VBScript which, as I analyzed it, would have written _another_ VBScript to disk
and then executed that, which in turn would download a file that appeared to be a
jpeg but pretty clearly was a win32 exe, which it would write to disk and then run.
I told him if he had let it start, someone else would immediately have more control
over his own computer than he could ever get back, short of reformatting and
reinstalling. And apparently this entire two-levels-of-VBScript-obfuscation thing
is just the ...let's say "reproductive tentacle"... of some sort of worm/virus/trojan,
and the site which emailed it to my contact, plus the site(s) serving the "jpeg" file
were just other victims. It's a nasty, nasty world out there in Win32/internet land,
and Microsoft built it that way.
