I actually used Gnome Basic, even in the limited state it was in, on my
Linux development box at home. It was definitely a step in the right
direction. Since the development team did their best interpretation of
'Titanic' with the project, I've been working with Kylix and XBasic a
bit more.
What would be really great would be a group of developers with compiler
experience getting together and creating an open source compiler that
would compile Visual Basic 6 projects. If the two requirements were met
(compiling VB6 and being open source) it would only be a matter of time
before people started picking up on the fact that there is a compiler
that could be utilized to move forward with a Classic-esque version of a
Visual Basic 6 based language. A little orginizational skills could
provide a means to incorporate our actual VB wishlists into the
compilers and there could be numerous people/companies that could write
IDEs for the language using whatever tools they saw fit. It would not
be much of a stretch to see the compiler being supported on multiple
platforms, either.
I wish I had the knowledge and experience to write such a compiler, or
at least contribute. Seriously, I do think that the right project with
the right exposure could give birth to a new (and old) language platform
that would attract a lot of serious interest...
Sounds pretty good. Too bad it is just a dream... ;-)
