No, I cannot explain that combination.
But I have some experiences about running a VB app 24-7 and sometimes getting a corrupted Access97 db
I found that keeping the db open 24-7 is not a good way, I changed my app so it closes the database when possible and reopen it later again, also make sure you destroy your object carefully.
another thing, concurrent usage of Acess97 via your own application and via Access97 will end up in a corupted db
