Variable as record selection

I have a variable from my subreport called varLate on the main report
I want to show all records that are late on the main report.
However I can never choose variables from subreports to do a record
selection on.
Can someone please let me know if this is possible?
The best i can do is SUPPRESS, but thats not the best solution.
