I'm using v8.5, but if I understand you correctly I think I've had the same
sort of problem with a pie chart I was working on recently.
All of the labels seemed to congregate in one or two locations on the graph
and ended up as just a garbled mess.
To get around it I brought up the Chart Options dialog (right click, Format
Chart | General menu item), went to the Data Labels tab and checked the
Labels on Sides checkbox.
This spread the labels out enough so that I can see the text of each one.
Not sure if this is an option for you or not, or if it will help, but it
seemed to get me around the same sort of problem.
