I need to rethink this quite a lot, especially the way the instances of the
UC get selected/deselected. I need to emulate a sort of Activate event where
the previous one is always deselected before a new one is selected. It
doesn't look like I can do that with simply GotFocus/LostFocus events

As I looked at it, I was wondering about a SwitchTo method (sound familiar?)
where you pass it the next item selected and it unselects the previous followed
by selecting the new one. That would ensure they both get switched as
needed. But, I didn't know if you planned to allow for multiple selections
which might complicate matters (a collection of selected/previous items?).

Thanks again for looking at this. I guess you can see now what I'm trying to
achieve here. Once it works (if?) then I'll package it as a reusable
component that can represent custom entities on the desktop-like Forms

FWIW, I reduce the number of icons on my desktop by using the Links
toolbar aligned to the top of the screen. To see that in action, right click
the TaskBar and select ToolBars.../Links. Drag the Links toolbar off the
Taskbar and onto the Desktop. When you right click that toolbar you can
select Open Folder to create subdirectories that organize your desktop
icons or other frequently used programs. You can drag that toolbar to
attach it to the top of the screen where it will stay. Then one click on a
folder in the Links toolbar presents a drop down menu of shortcuts, or
of subdirectories, depending on how far you want to take it.

None the less it only takes 2 or 3 clicks to get to often used programs
(documents, websites, etc, they are just shortcuts, launched from a menu
structure) that would take normally 4 or more clicks if starting from the
Start button....

I just mention that because you're going after the icon look and feel, and
some, like myself, might prefer a customizable menu structure....
