I remember a time when one of the more common controls-related questions
was from folks looking for a control that displayed animated GIFs. What I
don't recall is whether such a beast ever rose to prominance, or if the
demand simply slacked off?

The good news is that the patents have expired in 2003/2004, so they can
be used freely.

Search Planet Source Code for "animated GIF", there are 52 results, some
of which use the web browser control.

And IMO one of the best is this

The demo is could use a little work but it is solid code.
