\viewkind4\uc1\pard\lang2052\f0\fs20 Hi Brian,
\par
\par From your description, you encounter some error when tried upgrading WSS 3.0 sp1 to search server express 2008, correct?
\par
\par As for the installation, are you following the guide in the following reference and verfied all the setup prerequisites?
\par
\par #Upgrade to Search Server 2008 from Windows SharePoint Services 3.0
\par http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc297193.aspx#UpgradeAdv
\par
\par Also, for setup errors though you failed before the configuration wizard, you can still have a look at the psconfig log file to see whether there is any info there.
\par
\par C:\\Program Files\\Common Files\\Microsoft Shared\\web server extensions\\12\\LOGS
\par
\par In addition, since the issue is deploy and configuration specific, I suggest you also try posting in the sharepoint technet forum for more information:

\par I'm trying to upgrade my WSS 3.0 to Search Server 2008 Express in my dev
\par environment. I do have all the prereqs including WSS 3.0 SP1. During the
\par install and before I get to the configuration wizard, the install just errors
\par out and says "Microsoft Search Server 2008 encountered an error during setup."
\par
\par I don't see anything in the event viewer related to this error. Is there
\par somewhere I can look to find out what's wrong?
\par
\par Thanks!
