Why not create a calculated column that parses the file extension out of the file name?

Thanks for your reply. I did try that before, but it only tells me that
something is a "Document" and not what kind of document. I'm looking to
determine if a document is for example a Word document (.doc, docx) or Excel
(.xls, xlsx) or other. It would be great if I could just get the dot
extension of any file stored in the library.
