Re: Can't create web applications

Hi callahan.
I've managed to re create an autosigned certificate (which looks like it's the one I had previously) and assigned it to the web application from the IIS 7 manager (it was already created with SSL and has the link with https, I just modified the link to add the cert.), but when I try to access the site, after the certificate warning, I receive a 403-Forbidden error.
Do you know what may be happening?

I think this is the core of the problem I had.

Thanks in advance.

Regards,
Cesar.

I've just realized that I originally had a certificate created by default in my Win 2008 installation and now it's gone :-( Maybe that's the cause of why the web applications are not working with SSL.
I guess that I should research somewhere else how to recover it without having to generate it in an external site.

Thanks a lot for your advices!

Regards,
Cesar.

Wow, it worked with Central Administration? Without a certificate? That honestly doesn't make any sense. Are you sure, with central administration, that SSL is *required* and not just allowed? That you are using https:// to access it? Because SSL flatly cannot work without a certificate. It's really, really required.

Maybe somebody already added a certificate to the Central Administration IIS web site??

Hi callahan, thanks for your fast reply :-)

What you guessed is true, I don't have a certificate. However, I managed to implement SSL in the Central Administration site, and it works! *That* is what makes me ask myself why is that I can't implement it the same way in a normal web application.

Hope to hear from you soon ;-)

Thanks again.

Cesar.

Cesar, I'm glad we could help with your original question.

As for SSL, the web application's IIS Web site is supposed to be off *by design* when you configure it for SSL in SharePoint. You have to go get, and install, a SSL certificate for the IIS web site, *then* start the web site in order for the web application to work.

Did you get and install a certificate for the web application/IIS web site that you created? You can't just setup for SSL without also getting the certificate, it's the whole point of SSL.

Hi guys! thanks a lot for your advice.
I managed to make it work.
However, I'm still figuring out how to make a web application work with SSL. I created a new one indicating from the wizard that it should use SSL, created its site collection, reseted IIS, but it just doesn't works. The only message I receive is "Internet Explorer can't show the web page". I researched a little in the web and tried to set up the SSL configuration from IIS7 manager by checking "Require SSL" and "Client certificates - Accept", but it just happens the same as before. IE doesn't even warns about some invalid certificate.

Please, let me know your thoughts about this.

Thanks in advance.

Regards,

Cesar.

I just wanted to reiterate what Stefan said, which was correct.

You see, a web application is just a container. It has no content on it's own. You need to create a web application to have someplace to put site collections. And you have to create at least one site collection in web application for the web application to have anything to show you if you use its address.

You definitely will get a 404 error if you only create a web application without also creating a site collection to put in it.

Does that make sense?

You also may need to do an IISreset after creating the web application or else there can still be an error, even after you add the site collection.

Hi Cesar,

Did you only create the Web Application or also a Site Collection within it? Without Site Collection you won't get any result!

Cheers, Stefan

Hi. I have W2K8 with WSS 3.0 SP1 and even when I can create the admin site
during its installation, I can create a web application but not access it.
The browser only responds with a 404 error.

I have already tried uninstalling completely WSS and reinstalling it back
again, deleting every role on the server and reinstalling everything again
(except windows, of course), but nothing seems to work.

Could anyone point me what can be happening?

Thanks a lot.
Regards,
Cesar.
