wss3 shared workspace (infolabels) not updated

when i view a document from wss3 in a program such as word i see the "share
workspace" pane though it says "no data is currently available for this
workspace."
"updates failed"
do have to open ports or configure something in WSS to have this working?
WSS3 on a SBS 2k3 prem server using SSL connection.
