smigrate restore error 6553678

have read a couple of posts about this to no avail as yet.

**Problem**:
Setting up new server, migrating windows sharepoint services 2.0 site
from old server to new server. did smigrate backup on old server,
moved backup file to new server.

set up new blank web site in inetmgr (IIS Manager), set host header
value to [servername]

expanded the virtual server using stsadm -o extendvs with ownerlogin
as [domain]\Administrator and owneremail as sysadmin(me) email address

then did smigrate.exe -r -w http://[servername]/ -f "C:\Path\To\Backup
\File.wfp"

get error 6553678 The Web server at "http://[serverame]/"; does not
appear to have Windows SharePoint Services installed.

server in question is SBS2003 premium with all up-to-date service
packs. Logged in as [domain]\Administrator

**History**:
Had previous success when I used existing "Default Website" (had to
remove frontpage extensions first before expanding), without realising
this was used for server manager backup/monitoring screens - oops!

Re-installed "Company Intranet" and "Monitoring" from sbs2k3
installer, followed above methodology. worked fine (aside from bug
with calling new web site "sharepoint" resulting in error regarding
existing FP extensions when expanding the virtual server, even with
blank virtual server!).

Had to rename server (used gui method), DNS etc. seemed to update
fine, but restored sharepoint would not work (alas, can't remember
error), so removed site in inetmgr and started afresh as per above.

All entries in DNS and STSConfig database point to new server name

Sorry for long post, but rather complex issue and have spent best part
of a day on it and am tearing my hair out!
