Remote Client error

Hello,
after already investing some time into trying to solve this I am still stuck:
Windows SharePoint services 3.0 (with installed Application Template Core from the Microsoft site) hosted on Windows Server 2003 x64, database on a separate SQL 2005 server. All machines in AD.
Users from local and remote sites are accessing the server with integrated AD credentials mainly for basic functionality like team calendars.
Until last Friday all went well - and nothing did change at least on clients and server as far as I know.
On Monday local users still did perform well - but remote users get an error on loading the site stating errors on page like "_spBodyOnLoadFunctionNames is undefined".
This leads to the fact, that they can perform one other action on that loaded screen and then WSS does not perform any actions for them any more. (Each other action click may lead to a crash or object expected message, dependend from client configuration - IE6 or IE7).
Same user account works in the local site (in different subnets), but not from locations connected via WAN any more.
No visible errors in the event logs.
In the meantime I installed Service Pack 1 and the post SP hotfix package - no change of the behaviour.
If I copy the definition for spBodyOnLoadFunctionNames from the file OWS.JS to CORE.JS, the error for this function appears no longer on the remote machine. The same happens for ContextInfo, but this definition I found in the Internet only. And now I stuck again with g_ViewIdToViewCounterMap.
I would tend to assume a broken SPS, but why in this case it works for the same user as long as the computer is located in my LAN?
Would be great, if somebody has a hint.
Best greetings from Germany
Olaf
