Re: WSS 3.0 site restore problems (Was "Mike Walsh ....")

Tech-Archive recommends: Fix windows errors by optimizing your registry

The web page is here: -

http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/subscriptions/aa974230.aspx#SHARE

with the .windowsservices newsgroup listed in the SharePoint Portal Server (!) section.

Unfortunately I either remembered the rules incorrectly or they have changed them and you (now?) need to have a MSDN subscription.

(I have a computer-related book written by Mike Walsh too - but it wasn't written by me, there are a lot of us about. All I have to my name (=actually me) is chapter one of RealWorld SharePoint 2007 (Wrox).

Well, even though it was not flattery I was after, I appreciate what you are saying. I am truly at wits end without opening a case with Microsoft.

Mike Walsh had helped me in the past and I have a few of his books. I was hoping he would be a good source to put me on to more newsgroups.

That being said, I kind of understand what was written about the managed newsgroups, but not totally.

How do I get to them and sign up? I thought these MSDN sites were managed.
Can you possibly get me a link to the Sharepoint Services one so I can start putting out questions there?

Thanks for all the help!!!!

Good question, Mike.

As to other sources, the .sharepoint.setup_and_administration newsgroup has these days more traffic than this newsgroup so might be a better *alternative*.

SharePoint forums also have about the same amount of traffic but although there is a small chance there (bigger than here but not much) that someone from Microsoft will answer (it very rarely happens here in non managed threads) there seem to be far less experienced users answering questions in the forums compared to in the newsgroups.

(Personal feeling only based on the General and Admin forums only)

The best method is however to have a subject that reflects the problem. Flattering though it is that you think I have the answer to all questions, that is by no means the case and using my name as the subject might well put other people from responding. (From next week I am anyway away for 3 weeks and not even reading newsgroups during that time)

So please just as Mike (the other one) requests give us more details about your question and someone here may well be able to help you !

P.S. (MSDN) Managed newsgroups give a guarantee response within 24 hours (Mon-Fri, Shanghai time) from a Microsoft support person. Signing up for them is free; there is one for this newsgroup); and they use the public newsgroups to post replies. That might be what you are looking for if you don't get responses using the normal newsgroups. (When you post to a managed newsgroup you use a dummy address agreed with them when you signed up for the service. If you don't post messages exactly as agreed with them your message is still posted to the newsgroup but is regarded as a normal newsgroup message)

I don't know any other way to get to you.

I know you don't do much with the restore of WSS, but I'm not getting any
responses to my problem. I'm kind of in a time cruch here and don't want to
make a support call to MS - yet.

Do you know of any other sources that might be able to help me with WSS
Restore issues?

Thanks for the help.
