The other sites are not there, However you can specify them, and then
naturally they are there ...

Thanks Mike,
I did see the Site Aggregator in SPD 2k7's Web Part list also but it only
shows predefined information from the current site; no choice there.
Actually the info I am trying to display is in the same site collection just
on different sites (of course the source site has unique permissions and the
destination site is public - which didn't matter in WSS2). I will try your
suggestion again as I didn't see the list of sites on the right in SPD the
last time I tried. This time I know what to look for. Thanks again. Jack

I have created a Data View Web Part from a site and placed it in a
sub-site (using the standard SPD 2007 Data View menu item etc.)
I've not tried grabbing data from another site collection but provided
you can specify this in the list of sites to choose from (in the
right-hand column) I don't see why it shouldn't work as well.
P.S. I was amused at the suggestion from Jeff to use something that's
only in MOSS ....

In WSS 2.0, I had several html pages with data views on them that would go
into a list on another site in the site collection and pull information to
display in the data view. The fact that the source list had unique
permissions had no impact what I was displaying in the data view (which was
public information).
I can not seem to do this in WSS 3.0. When I go to select the data view
source it only gives me choices on the current site.
I have tried several web parts such as the page viewer web part which can
bring up the list but I cannot change any of it without automatically
changing the source as in views or columns displayed.
My design is this: I have a list of documents that are available for sign
out from the Document Control Administrator. We want to handle the
maintenance of this hard copy library electronically to include Workflows
that will remind users if they have any overdue items. And I want to display
key columns from that list on a public site within the same site collection
so that users can check to see if the document they need is available before
going all the way down to the hard copy library and find out it is not there.
Any ideas would be much appredciated. Thanks Jack- Hide quoted text -

Wow, I always learn something new up here! I hadn't seen that link in
SD, a lot of stuff seems a bit buried. I just tried it out and it kind
of works -- SD warns periodically the the list no longer exists, but
then it works anyway.
This approach does not seem to be able to cross domain boundaries or
cross site collection boundaries. I just tried it...
SD edits seem a bit fragile in my experience and difficult to maintain
in a production environment. In testing this the SD UI froze up
several times, then unfroze (no crash) -- I'm a bit skeptical about
SD's build quality.
Sorry about the mention of MOSS, I couldn't resist.
