Does the SQL 2005 account (the account that SQL is running under) have
access to the backup location?

i am receiving the same error.

here is how the error shows in the Central Admin Backup and Restore
screen:

Object SharePoint_Config_Server failed in event OnBackup. For more
information, see the error log located in the backup directory.
SqlException: Cannot open backup device
'\\server\ExternalBackup1\Sharepoint\full_oct21_2007\spbr0002\0000000B.bak'.
Operating system error 5(Access is denied.). BACKUP DATABASE is
terminating abnormally.

i must be missing something in terms of permissions... what else do i need
to give permissions to? i'm assuming it's something to do with the
databases residing on another server in the domain...or with the databases
being in something other than default sql express...
