Abnormal growth of WMSDE .MDF File

Hello,
one out of a number of Teamsites on a WSS 3.0 server has meanwhile reached a Filesize of 1 GB, although it has only about 5 team websites and documents worth around 30MB that are mostly static and not worked on.
The only thing is, that a lot of sites have been added and removed to that site since it was setup, which caused the LDF Log file to reach a size of > 7Gig.
The Log File size could easily be reduced with common SQL Server commands, but I wonder why a MDF file grows so large when there is not that much content? What actions and steps can cause an MDF file to grow, other than adding files/images etc.?

This is more a general question, the server can easily handle MDF files of that size and larger, but issues like performance pop to my mind when I see files growing large for no obvious reason.

From the available documentation I would assume that there is no way of "cleaning up" a WSS database?

Thanks in advance,
Eric
