Hello, we have the same error on a new installation.

The solution you provided did not help, as reg.exe and regini.exe are
already existing. They have also the same version number as on a system with
no errors.

Are there any other solutions?

I should also note, when i try and start this and it fails, if i go
into the event viewer there are a number of errors coming up. I have
done some searching and have found some resolutions that people were
not placing there domain name in front of the user name to access
rights. I have tried placing the domain in front of the username and
have given this user admin rights on both the sql server and this
sharepointserver none of which have worked. Here are the errors I am
getting.

The uninstall and reinstall of .net framework 2 and 3 as well as
sharepointmust have fixed it as I have it installed. However I am
running into another issue.

I am following the MSinstallinstructions ( Deployment for Windows
SharePointServices3.0 technology ) and am at the portion "Start the
WindowsSharePointServicesSearchservice".

I click to "Start" the service and then enter in the domain\username
and password for the service account and content access account which
both use the same username/password. The first time it chugged along
for maybe 15 seconds then it came up saying Error "File Not Found"
Troubleshoot issues with WindowsSharePointServices. ( I have
clicked on this and it didn't work before doing a reinstall of
sharepoint. Once reinstalled, help comes up but there is no soluction
but I still get this same error) Now when i try it over again this
same eror appears after around 5 seconds of chugging along.

The database has been built. I can see it on our SQL server.

What is this error?

1GB is enough. MOSS needs at least 1GB otherwise there are config

errors but WSS 3.0 is OK with much less.

After choosing Advancedinstallyou should during the installation
process
(i.e. before the wizard) be asked which database system you are
connecting
to. From what you say you didn't get this.

I'm wondering which alternative you chose after choosing
AdvancedInstall.

If you do decide to start again. Back out everything on that server
(Remove
Programs ...) including both .NET Framework 3.0 *and* 2.0. Then run
.NET
Framework 3.0 again and the WSSinstall. Key is also that you have given
whatever you are installing WSS as sufficient rights to the SQL Server
system.

Let us also know which Microsoft (or other) installation instructions
you
were following.

Thanks for the reply Mike and here is some additional information.

I am attempting toinstallWSS 3.0 on a 3.2ghz xeon with 1 gig of RAM
running windows 2003. If more RAM is required I can get a bit more
added to this VM. We have a seperate server running SQL server that
we want to pointSharePointto but it looked as though this portion
of
theinstall/Configuration is done in a step further in theinstall
process?

I installed IIS as well as .net framework 2 and 3. Once installed, I
downloaded the WSS 3.0 exe from here:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=D51730B5-48F...

Then began the installation of WSS 3.0. Theinstallasked if i wanted
to do a basic or advanced and I choose advanced but did not change
any
of the defaults here. It was more of a curiosity thing I guess.
This
portion of theinstallwent fine from what I can tell and then I was
asked to finish and start the Confiuration Wizard which i did.

It began the configuration wizard and started in on the 10 steps. It
gets to step 5 or 6 of 10 and then i receive the error:

"Failed to RegisterSharePointServices:.
An Excpetion of type System.IO.FileNotFoundException was thrown. The
system cannot find the file specified. (Exception form HRESULT:
0x80070002)

and the installation quits.

I tried doing a repair and followed the same installation steps above
with the same result. I then uninstalled and reinstalled with the
same error occuring.

Is there any other information you need to assist?
