Limits on WSS 3.0 database size?

Does anyone know what the upperlimits in terms of number of files or
size/number of files it can store?

I am hesitant to start to move everything into sharepoint vs leaving
it on our file server, but the interface in sharepoint and features
makes it desirable. Being able to get alerts on changes, check in/
out, ease of remote access, search, etc. I dont particularly like
the linking of a webpart to external storage.

What are the thoughts on the board about using Sharepoint as the
primary file server and what are the limits (when using the free WSS
3.0)?

Thanks
