Here is what seemed to fix our issue, hopefully it will help someone
else.
It is caused by a conflict between Office 11 (2003) and Office 12
(2007). In mine and Rod's cases at least the 2007 Office product
installed is SharePoint Designer.
To resolve the issue:
1. Search on your laptop for the mso.dll file. You should find one in
the Office 11 folder and one in the Office 12 folder.
2. Rename the mso.dll file in the Office 12 directory to mso.dll_old
3. Go to start>control panel>add/remove programs and find the Office
2007 product that you have installed.
4. Highlight the product and select the "Change" button that becomes
available. From the next screen that appears, choose "Repair" and hit
OK. This might take longer than you expect - be patient.
5. Reboot your machine
