I've had this kind of thing on a client where I had mixed Office 2003 and
Office 2007 beta products (which seemed to be the only thing that could have
affected it however odd that may seem), but unless all clients have just had
an installation of one of the bits of that, then that's out (and it's a wild
shot anyway).

I only had the problems with IE - with Firefox I was asked for
authentication and then the site was accessible. My impressions was that IE
was giving the error messages because fo some reason it wasn't asking for
authentication.

That's all I have. Try with Firefox at least. The rest is way off being
proved.

3. No security patches were applied.

Some things that I've tried:

1. Moving the Windows SharePoint Services Web Application service to
another machine in the farm (that was previously just running the
search service.) Same result.

2. Complete uninstall / reinstall of sharepoint on the original
server. Same result.

What's interesting is that, without the default.aspx:

http://server:30476/ --> 500 INTERNAL SERVER ERROR

Some subsites are working:

http://server:30476/services/devsvcs--> works
http://server:30476/services --> does not.

There are various nastygrams in the logs, but I can't tell a symptom
from a cause. Some examples:
