Re: Step to performing a fresh install on Win2003 Server Std / SQL Server 2005 / WSS 3.0

Tech-Archive recommends: Speed Up your PC by fixing your registry

1. Install SQL Server 2005 on the server

2. Install WSS v3 specifying the Advanced installation. You will be asked
for details of the database.

Hi,

After repeated failures, I'm after a step by step guide, or a pointer
in the right direction, for installing WSS 3.0 in a stand-alone
environment with SQL Server 2005 Standard on a Windows Server 2003 R2
Standard (single server set-up).

I'm having problems:

a) Installing sharepoint to use SQL Server Standard Edition (instead
of SSEE) directly from the start (as opposed to migrating/upgrading
from SSEE) - can't seem to find the options to specify the database
using the single-server setup.

b) If I do a sharepoint install to use SSEE, then try to upgrade, the
upgrade fails (I'm using the method of doing a full farm backup, then
restore to a new location, is this the correct way?)

c) If I install sharepoint first using a stanalone setup (SSEE), then
SQL Server is unable to upgrade the instance when I install it.

I'm just a bit baffled by the array of possible permutations there are
to arrive at this goal.

Just really after a sequence of events, and pointers to which order to
to install (SQL Server or WSS first?), and any advise on the problems
I may encounter.

I have a site already set up in WSS 2.0, but I'm planning on migrating
this manually from the old server once I have the Grass-Roots set-up
in place for WSS 3.0, in other words, I've no content to worry about
at the moment.

Any help and advice from you experts would be most apreciated, as
you'll have gathered, i'm a bit new to this!!

Thanks in advance,

Alex
