Re: WSS3 - How can I automatic have an increasing number in a new line/item

Callahan,
That won't work, since the [ID] is not created at the point that the
calculated field is evaluated. So what happens is that when you add
the calculated field, it appears correctly for all existing items, but
whenever a new item is created, it does not work.
If there is a solution to this, it has eluded me, and it strikes me as
a huge feature gap in WSS 3.

Additional detail:
I attempted to resolve this by using a workflow to construct the ID in
the format I want (JIDXXXX, where XXXX is left zero padded). The
problem with this is that the workflow has not completed by the time
that the page reloads, confusing my users with a blank field where the
ID should be.

Ruben,
Since the ID field gets created by every list to increment for each item,
just use that. Then, to have it show up in the edit view of a list item,
create a calculated column that simply has the [ID] field as the formula.
It will reflect that ID field's value in its contents for each item,
displaying it's number in the edit view or any other view you want that
field in.

Hi,
Hope you will understand.
I created a list in WSS3 and my fist column in a number that I would like
to have it increasing automatically when I create a new line/Item.
There is certainly a value that I can enter to have this working.
Thanks in advance for help.
