Re: Change the value for 'Created By' field

Thank you for your input. I may be missing something here, but I am simply
trying to make use of the more granular permissions offered in the Advanced
Settings for a list (SharePoint Services 3.0 on Windows Server 2003 SP1).

I have populated a list of projects with 24 items. Because I entered them,
they show as 'Created By' me. I now expect end-users to look after their own
list items, yet not be able to edit those items for which they are not
responsible. This is where the Advanced Settings seemed to come into play;
Item-level permissions shows a radio selection choice for Edit Access of
'Only their own'. That seemed just the ticket, but when I applied it I found
users couldn't edit any items.

So I deduced that what constitutes 'their own' item was set by the 'Created
By' field and not the 'Assigned To' field. Hence my desire to edit the
'Created By' field. At the moment, any user with Contributor permissions can
edit any item within the list which could lead to problems.

Moving forward, I hope that users will now add any new projects to the list
themselves, hence getting the 'Created By' setting correct. My objective is
that users can only edit their own projects, while being able to see all
projects. Is there a better way to achieve this?

Many thanks and regards

Sebastian

I don't see why you need to use "Edit Own Items". It's certainly not
standard on any of my sites.

Can you explain?

Certainly there's no point in using "Edit Own Items" if only one person is
doing the uploading of items/documents and you want other people to be able
to edit them.

(Which seems to be the case)

Hello,

There are many delightful improvements in SharePoint Services 3.0 and I am
hoping to get wider acceptance amongst my users. In order to do this, I
often have to populate the records within a list so that people can see a
'working' system.

Then there is the 'Edit own items' permission, which offers very useful
fine
tuning of permissions. Problem is that it seems linked to the 'Created
By'
field. Since I have created the items, only I have the necessary
permissions
to change an item when using the 'Edit own items' setting.

My question is therefore to find out how to change the value of the
'Created
By' field. It is not offered as an editable field in any of the views I
have
created. Happy to do this programatically if necessary. Any guidance on
how
to start with this will be gratefully received.

With thanks and regards
