I’m having the same upgrade problem from SPS 2003 to moss 2007.
Running prescan fails with errors and tells me to see the log:
Number of broken sites: 6 (2.86% of total).
Number of webs scanned: 853
Number of broken webs: 14 (1.64% of total).
Number of webs using custom template: 14 (1.64% of total).
Number of pages scanned: 43962
Number of unghosted pages: 250 (0.57% of total).
So I follow the steps in KB918744…
Step 1 of KB918744 works. I have no orphans.
Step 2: Run the Spsadm.exe tool if you are running SharePoint Portal Server
2003. The repairorphans operation is not an option in Spsadm!!!!
Step 3: Remove and then reattach the content databases on the virtual server.
For some reason I can’t detach the SITE DB. I just get looped back to the
content databaser management page and everything is still attached.
In conclusion; Step 2 and 3 won’t work for me and I can’t move forward on
the upgrade. Suggestions are welcome.

Hello,.
Regarding the issue, I suggest you may first perform a database repair with
stsadm.exe:
Description of a new command-line operation that you can use to repair
content databases in Windows SharePoint Services

And then perfomr a clean reboot on the server, and terminate other
applications which is possible to access the same SQL server database. And
then, execute the command:
prescan /all
Can this help fix the issue?
Sincerely,
Luke Zhang
