Renaming a List Column

I have a sharepoint custom list in WSS 2.0 site and I am trying to rename
one of the columns. When I try I get an action cannot be completed error.
I am logged on as an administrator and I can create columns, delete columns
but I cannot rename them or chnage any of the other settings.
