Ah, using the IP address instead of the machine name would work, especially
if you weren't running DNS.
And the machinename\localuser for the SQL server should work for accessing
the server. Now that's the search service account right, and not the
content access account?

i have a 2003 std box with sql server 2000. no AD, only local user
accounts. I had the problem where i couldn't start spsearch and i got
vss error messages in the event viewer.
i got it to work by putting the box name in from of the user account
and using the box's ip address in the name of the SQL Server field.
