Ok...
I found this in the "Planning and Architecture for Windows SharePoint
Services 3.0 Technology" posted at
http://technet2.microsoft.com/Office/en-us/library/3e3b8737-c6a3-4e2c-a35f-f0095d952b781033.mspx?mfr=true
"Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 supports SQL Server authentication and
local computer process accounts for farms that are not running Active
Directory. For example, you can implement local accounts by using identical
user names and passwords across all servers within a farm."
I have done this and it is not working....

Has anyone one got WSS 3.0 working with a backend database?
I am getting a System.Security.Principal.IdentityNotMapped when trying to
configure the backend database.
I created the user "sharepoint" on both servers with the same password and
using NTLM to authenticate. When I go through the configuration, the
databases get created but something happens during step 2 and fails with
the above exception.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Chris
