Re: Search services not available

Excuse me for butting in, but I've been trying to start the search
service on WSS3.0 for weeks and am getting no where. The errors I get
all revolve around SQL user login failure. The question I keep asking
the wall is this: What set of conditions need to be true for the
Sharepoint Search Service to work? It's a waste of time chasing down
specific error messages because if the service account can't login to
SQL and manage the database, the relevance of any errors is mute. The
service has to login before anything will work.
Do you guys ever look in the Servers Log Files to see what SQL is
complaining about. I just keep seeing authentication errors for user
'wssearch'. And no mater what user account enter in the Sharepoint
setup screen, still results in the same authentication error with what
ever name I tried starting search with.
Does anyone know of a document that provides the basic setup for
search?

Hello Dave,
It seems there is some problems during the start process, we may try to
stop the search service with stsadm, and start it again, to see if this
will help:
1. Open a command prompt window on the server, and change directory to
Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\web server extensions\12\BIN.
2. Type
stsadm -o spsearch ¨Caction list
This will output the current association of content databases to search
servers.
3. Type
stsadm -o spsearch -action stop
This stops the Windows SharePoint Services Search service (this action
throws away the search index).
If you encounter a problem or error, do the following:
Type
net stop sptimerv3
net stop spsearch
If the service does not stop, do the following:
1.Open a command prompt window, and type
run tasklist /svc
2.Find "SPSearch" in the output and note the process ID <pid>.
3.At the command prompt, type
run taskkill /f /pid <pid>
4.At the command prompt, type
stsadm -o spsearch -action stop
net start sptimerv3
After all about steps, we have stoped the search service on the server, and
then we can start it in "Central Administration > Operations > Services on
Server "
or with stsadm.exe
stsadm -o spsearch -action start -farmserviceaccount DoMAIN\name
-farmservicepassword password -databaseserver searchdatabaseserver
-databasename WSS_Search_NewDB
Sincerely,
Luke Zhang
