Hi Mike,
Thanks for your reply. Well yes i do understand it is a limit for the
url on the whole. But in case if i increase the file name then it would
be more then 260 charecter, for which i am able to a normal activity
like opening and editing. But if the document falls in between 255 to
260, the error occurs as specified. And this error occurs only while
opening the document by clicking on the link.
Would be able to put some ideas ??
Thanks
Suki

The 255 limit is for the entire length of the path to the item - not just
the file name itself but also for the name of the site + sub-site + document
library (etc.).
I'm surprised though that you could upload it.

Hi,
This error is happening to only one document in our document repository
on SharePoint. The name of the MS Word document is:
"1102448RFC_Estimate_MLCG HRPY_New borns code for SPA.doc"
The document has no problems being uploaded to the SharePoint document
repository.
When I click on the document I get an error message, '5009', 'String
longer than 255 characters'.
I tried deleting the document and reloading it to SharePoint. Error
still occurs.
I uploaded a different document with a longer file name than the above
file, no error. This appears to eliminate the length of the filename
as an issue.
I then modified the name by editing properties of the document and
added some charecters to the end of the filename. The document can be
opened succesfully. If I remove my initials, the error reappears.
You can still download the file successfully to your desktop by
right-clicking on the filename and selecting 'Save Target as...'
Any ideas why this might be happening?
Thanks for your time and help!
Suki
