Re: Search services not available

Let me clarify that our SQL server uses Windows Authentication, and I have
"assigned" the same windows user account to the search service as the one
that runs the IIS application pool. I thought that by using the same
account, even if it was just for now to get it working, that would be easier
since I only have one user account to worry about all of sharepoint.

I have four databases in my SQL server:
SP_TEST_GMSNET (which is the config database)
SP_TEST_GMSNET_CONTENT (which is one and only content database)
WSS_SEARCH_GMSDEV (which is the database created by sharepoint for the
search services)
WSS_AdminContent (not sure what this is, but obviously something to do
with the administration console for sharepoint because when I took it
offline, I couldn't connect to the Central Administration. :).

I have one windows account, called SPService, which is a db_owner of all 4
dbs listed, and has 2 SQL server roles: dbcreator and securityadmin.

In Central Administration, I have configured the Search service to use this
account for the search services (Service Account and Content Access
Account). When I type in the password for this service and click OK, it
appears to accept it. But when I go back to this page, the password fields
are blank. I don't know if that's because it doesn't retain the password
for security sake or if it didn't actually accept the password in the first
place. Nevertheless, when I switch back to the "Services on Server" page,
the service called "Windows SharePoint Services Search" has the comment
"Required on Farm, not running" and under the status column, it says
"Starting" and there is no value in the action column (i.e. I can't start or
stop the service).

When I check the actual Windows Sharepoint Search Service in the windows
control panel admin tools, I can start it, stop it, whatever. The Log On As
field is the SPService user account I created in Active Directory for
running the Sharepoint services with.

I have tried rebooting the server, but when I go into the Sharepoint Central
Administration, it lists it as "Starting".

Any advice?

Hello Dave,

Do you mean the service's status is still "starting"? If you perform a
reboot on the server and check the service's status, will it be started
correctly?

Sincerely,

Luke Zhang
