No I cannot perform a search. . .
Interesting development this afternoon, though. I discovered taht when WSS
was trying to access the database server to create the search database, it
was using the server's computer account to authenticate (I was using Windows
authtentication). I changed it to SQL server authentication and it was able
to create the database and start the search service. . .

Can you perform a search on your site?

Thanks. I amde that change. . .
However, I still am not having success at getting the search service
working. . . I keep getting redirected back to the configuration page.
In
the services applet I do see that the serach service is running, though.
. .
Has anyone seen these issues?

You need to go into Component Services in mmc and fix that error ... it
is a very common error. Go to DCOM config and grant permisson for the
sharepoint account for the IIS WAMREG admin Service. Checking all four
boxes worked for me.

I tried using a domain admin account. . .I did not get the "unknown
error"
but it still says the search service is "required on farm, but not
running"
When I click the link for "start" it takes me to the configuration
page
for
the serach service
In the event log at approximately the same time I made the changes to
the
search service, I have the following DCOM error:
The application-specific permission settings do not grant Local
Activation
permission for the COM Server application with CLSID
{61738644-F196-11D0-9953-00C04FD919C1}
to the user NT AUTHORITY\NETWORK SERVICE SID (S-1-5-20). This security
permission can be modified using the Component Services administrative
tool.
