Simple Question

This seems like something that should be fairly simple to accomplish,
but it's been 3 days of research and still no go. Maybe I'm just being
dense.

1.) We have a preexisting intranet web app built in ASP.NET using the
2.0 framework. It's running off "webserver." To access this page
requires a user to login.

2.) We have recently setup and begun using SPS for Server 2003 on a
different server, "spsserver." Of course, users are required to login
into this intranet SPS as well.

3.) All is well until execs requested that I merge these two so that
they have one common login. In other words they want the intranet web
app on "webserver" to now be installed on "spsserver" and simply be
able to use the SPS login to access both.

4.) Easy! My solution is to...umm...well, it's not exactly
straightforward.

This seems like it should be easy. What am I missing? Do we need to
upgrade to Sharepoint Portal Server 2003? Help me out here folks.
Thanks much for any guidance.
