We are using WSS only - not portal server. We are using Win2k 2003.
We want to store files of type obr in SharePoint. In content they are
basically text files but when opened by our EDRMS (Objective) the
document reference is used by Objective to locate and load a document
in the document database. On the local machine, clicking a file of type
obr opens up Objective and after authentication displays the document.
However when the obr file is loaded into a SharePoint document library
and selected from there, IIS (?) or SharePoint just displays the file
contents on the browser, which is usually just one line of text. That
is not particularly useful.
We have tried going to IIS configuration and adding a new Mime type
obr/application/octet-stream thinking that when IIS sees this it will
not open the file but just send it down to the workstation to open.
That doesn't seem to work and IE still opens it.
Interesting, I loaded a file of type igx (Igrafx business map) for
which I am sure our IIS server has no defined mime type for. When I
click that file. IE notes it's an undefined File Type and offers to
download the file and save it - it does not try to load the file
itself. I am wondering since both obr and igx should be unknown types
to IIS, why the behaviour is different. Even more interesting when that
igx file is selected using Firefox, Firefox offers options to open the
file (select Browse for the application) or Save
Any help really appreciated.
Thanks

Just an update to my post. I added the type igx to my PC and set the
default application to be Notepad. When I clicked the file in
SharePoint IE then offered to Open or Save the file but it still did
not it was an unknown file type. When I clicked open, Notepad dutifully
opened the file (
