Re: WSS in Vista?

Here's what started me thinking this was possible. From "Windows Vista Developer Story: Internet Information Services" (http://msdn.microsoft.com/windowsvista/default.aspx?pull=/library/en-us/dnlong/html/InteInfoSer.asp)

"Windows Vista and Longhorn Server "Longhorn" deliver a unified Web platform that provides integrated support for Internet Information Services (IIS), ASP.NET, Windows Communication Foundation, and Windows SharePoint Services."

This seems to imply pretty strongly that it's supposed to work.

Contrary to some previous posters, we routinely run Developer versions of "Server" products on end user OSes. SQL Server and BizTalk are two that come to mind, not to mention that MS Virtual Server will run on XP Pro. The ability to run a developer version of SharePoint services on Vista Enterprise or Vista Ultimate doesn't seem like much of a stretch.

I only replied as I was reading up on a few things. I think the MS info is a little confusing then on this front as the following web page on MS website (http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserver/longhorn/default.mspx) seems to imply something different.

I read a bit more and they are saying the new Windows Server is a mix of the new code from Vista but isn't part of the Vista branch of code.

And a quote from (http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserver/longhorn/evaluation/overview.mspx)

"Windows Vista and Windows Server "Longhorn" originally began as part of a single development project, and as such they share a number of new technologies across networking, storage, security and management. Although the development of Windows Vista and Windows Server "Longhorn" have branched into separate releases with different release cycles, many of these enhancements apply to both Windows Vista and Windows Server "Longhorn." When organizations deploy both operating systems, they will see how the combined client-server infrastructure provides even greater advantages"

Longhorn Server is hardly a "new version of Windows 2003". We already
had that - it was called Windows 2003 R2.

Instead Longhorn Server is a server version of/based on the Vista code
- after all Vista was called Longhorn before the name became "Vista".

Semantics, I know, but then the two previous answers had to my mind
already answered the question (especially Asif's) and your "There are
no server editions of Vista" is misleading.

The Vista range of products are for desktop users. There are no
server editions of Vista.

You can only use WSS on the Windows 2003 platform. In the 2nd
quarter of 2007 there will be a new version of Windows 2003 server
which is called Windows Server "Longhorn". This is running on a
totally different track to Vista.

Normally the desktop editions of Windows come with IIS5 (Windows 2k)
and IIS5.1 (XP). I presume MS are doing the right thing and
standardizing things and installing a "normal" version of IIS7 on
desktop editions to aid local web development.

I just recently noticed that Vista Ultimate RC1 includes what
appears to be a full version of IIS7. I dug around to see if it also
had WSS v3 but found nothing. I tried installing from the
stand-alone installation and it fails saying that 2003 SP1 is
required.

Does anyone kow if WSS will be supported on any version of Vista?
This would certainly streamline some of our development.
