The 3rd party backup software can backup those folders mentioned below and we
are doing so. Why cant your typical backup software (Veritas, NTbackup, etc)
back SharePoint (without SQL)? Why does the STSADM tool have to be used?

Sharepoint has site collections and webs. A site collection has a bunch of.
webs (also called sites) in it. Child sites. STSADM in v2 only functions
at the Site Collection level, so it backs everything up. If a user deletes
a web, you can't just restore that web, you have to restore the entire Site
Collection and then use something like SMIGRATE to pull the web out of that.
If you want a comprehensive backup you'll probably also want to back the
"C:\inetpub" and "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Web Server
Extensions\60" directories.

Wayne,
Thanks for the info. We are backing up the server with Connected to an
offsite location. My job is to backup their SharePoint (whatever that
consist of) to the offsite location as well. Apparently the backup
software
doesnt/cant do it. Its a small company with just one site (I believe).
When
you mean top level site(s) do you mean anything under the "website" folder
in
IIS? If I do use the stsadim tool will I be backing up everything I need?
This company does not use SQL. Thanks for your help.

I use stsadmin from within a script that enumerates all top level sites
and
backs them up to a folder which is then backed up but our nightly systems
backup. The script deletes the previous backups as they are copied over
to
the tape backups at night and so are not needed.
This will only backup top level sites so you will need to restore the
complete site to access any child site data. I have been using a VPC
instance to do that and it works well and it gives me the option to
retrieve
from any number of days back within the limits of our backup tape
rotation
I am assuming you have/are backing up the server already though.

I assume this needs to be run seperate from the typical backup if you're
not
running a SQL backend? Can you backup using STSADM.EXE and then back
that
up
with another backup product such as Veritas or Connected? The reason
why
I
asked is that I need to start backing up the Sharepoint, but we also
need
to
send it offsite (which our current backup solution [Connected] does).
Any
suggestions?

Steve,
STSADM.EXE. Cant get more free than this. This tool is ideal for
backing up your entire site collection.

Even better than that though, SPbackup.exe from the SharePoint
Resource
Kit. It creates a batch file that utilizes the stsadm.exe. The batch
file
either backups all sites or just sites that have changed in the past
day
depending on how you configure it. Pretty sweet.
