Anonymous access to top site, authenticated access to sub-sites?

Tech-Archive recommends: Repair Windows Errors & Optimize Windows Performance

Hi

I'm running Windows Sharepoint Services as a default website, we have
quite a few sites created already and we are still piloting the
product.

IIS is configured to use Windows Authentication which is working fine
however a requirement has arose to have Anonymous access to the top
level but still authenticate them at a subsite level.

Is this only possible using Virtual Sites in WSS?, so we'd have a
default site that uses Anonymous Access in IIS but the other sites for
say example Finance, HR would be configured to use Windows
Authentication and require a login?

I assume that whatever the authentication defined at IIS level
propogates to all the sites created below.....so you can't have a site
configured for Anonymous Access but still have restrictions in say a
document library in that site as there would be no way of
authenticating the users?

If someone has had similar experience I'd appreciate some comments on
the above...or even if anyone has alternative suggestions to Virtual
Servers.

Many thanks in advance.
Matt.
