Re: Document Library location

Hi Karmin,

If you read all the replies to the original post you'll see Todd answered 1
of Drews initial questions which led onto my reply about mapping the drive
for backup but also access to others through the file system.
In regards to your questions, Todd answered your first one about where the
file is stored, as for your 2nd question (make files and folders from another
server available in the DL) the answer is no.

This is good information for backing up a DL, but I think the original
question was not about this. If I understand the original question, the
poster would like his/her users from within Sharepoint to be able to access
files/folders on a seperate file server.

My question is similar: when adding files/folder to the DLs, do they
actually get loaded into the MSDE? Can you make files/folders on another
server part of the DL?

Thanks.

Hi Drew,

If you create a mapped drive on the server to the sharepoint DL and then
replicate this with your other network folder this will work. So your server
would have the mapped drive and you'd run say a scheduled task or a directory
watcher to replicate the files between the two drives.

Hopefully you'll work out the replication once you've created a mapped drive
from the DL..
To do this goto, 'My Network Places', Tools --> Map Network Drive
Where you specify the folder, rather then a network share like
//myserver/files you want to put in the url of the Sharepoint dl, so
http://mywsssite/lists/mydoclibrary/

I am not following you very well. Are you talking about mapping a windows
drive letter on my workstation that points to a sharepoint document library?

I am looking for a way to make a document library mirror a file server.
Have a user that is on the sharepoint site see the same files that are on the
file server.
How would I create a DL that points to my fileserver?

Hi Drew,

You can map a document library to a network drive, its as simple as putting
in the URL of the DL when you create a mapping from Windows.
You could then get your backup software to get the files from here.
This is a good low budget backup of Sharepoint and should work....
We are looking at Veritas for our enterprise backup solution as it
apparently has document level restore in the latest version.

Thanks for the info.
I did like the file server option in previous versions of sharepoint. Too
bad that is not a configurable option.

Everything in WSS is stored in SQL or MSDE, never in the file system.
You cannot have it store stuff in the file system.

Backups and restores are definitely a pain point with WSS. I'm not sure
what you've looked at so far, but you have three options that are free, or
at least included with WSS.

1) Smigrate (or FrontPage, which is a frontend for Smigrate)
2) STSADM
3) SQL database backups.

I won't explain each one, but you should have enough now to do some
searching and see the pluses and negatives of each method.

Good luck.

Are documents in Sharepoint now stored inside SQL or MSDE?
Can I move this to a space on our fileserver for backup and ease of
access?

Thanks
