since resolved the problem and intend (when time permits) to post the
solution in case someone else faces the same problem.

Hello everyone,
I have been working on this problem for three days now, and no matter
what I try, I keep getting the same problems.
Sharepoint went down on our main server, I fought with that for 2 days
trying to get it back up. After much searching and posting, I have
given up on it for now. I have now stopped the SQL service on that
server and retrieved the following files from the SQL Folder.
STS_Config,mdf
STS_Config_log.ldf
STS_servername_1.mdf
STS_servername_1.ldf
I have since set up a test environment of Windows 2003 Standard using
Virtual PC. I have then installed WSS along with the SQL Desktop
Server. I have then followed the directions in KB 829113, to restore
these databases to WSS.
I have now gotten to the point where open the page to
http://localhost/default.aspx. The message that is displayed is:
"Unable to connect to database. Check database connection information
and make sure the database server is running. For tips on
troubleshooting this error, search for article 823287 in the Microsoft
Knowledge Base at http://support.microsoft.com.";
This article tells me to do the the following things:
1. Make sure the SQL Database is running - It is and it has been
restarted countless times
2. Make sure IIS is not running in 5.0 Isolation Mode - Its not
3. Make sure the account for the application pool has appropriate
permissions to access the SQL Server - I have tried the following
accounts:
1. Network Service
2. Local System
3. Administrator
This test server is running on Virtual PC and thus is not on a domain.
The only user this test machine has is administrator.
None of the above things solve my problem. Sharepoint just refuses to
connect to the database.
I have the following errors in my eventlog:

Is it even possible to restore Sharepoint after it crashes?? At the
very least is there anyway I can get into the Database and pull out
some Microsoft Word Documents that were in a list?
Word to the wise: Don't install WSUS and WSS on the same server and
than remove WSUS, unless you want to deal with this.
